    which underlay should I choose for my carpet?
    Underlay is an important part of how your carpet will  feel and perform long term
    carpet underlay is often overcharged for by the retailers
    because the focus has been on the carpet 
    carpetright are renowened for over charging for a poor performing underlay imported from a long way away
    poor underlays are usually unbranded appear thick and solid 

    How to find out how good a carpet underlay is ?
    carpet underlay squash test:
    ( do the squash test with your fingers and then imagine how flat the actual underlay will become with your foot standing on the carpet and underlay  
    soft feel underfoot is due to dense underlay and not squash down to 3ml it stays strong therefore supporting the carpet and feet
     
    How to have a soft feel carpet when walking on it ?
    Surprisingly not a long pile carpet but a dense carpet 
    ideally a carpet with a weight ie 50 oz this  means the carpet pile is pushed closer together than a 32 oz also the gauge helps ie 1/8th 
    gauge or 10th gauge 
    Then as noted above the  underlay plays a crucial part in the soft under foot luxury feel
